What Exactly Are The Benefits of Using a Hair Glaze?

You’ve had your hair colored and now your colorist want to use a hair glaze?  Many women don’t understand the fabulous benefits of a glaze for merely another 10 minutes on your head!

Screen Shot 2016-12-01 at 11.23.46 PMLet’s say you have found that perfect color but then your stylists suggests you getting a hair glaze after your color.  Hmmm…. you think, “do I really need that?”  After all, most of us are running from one appointment to the next so when we get a suggestion from our hair colorist that she wants to add a glaze… Well, we come up with all kinds of excuses.  Maybe we don’t want to wait the extra 10 minutes that a glaze would add, or perhaps we are concerned about too many chemicals, or just the fact that we may believe it’s just one more harmful product to the integrity of our hair, so why should we?  Here is how we break down the benefits of using a hair glaze (just so you know. next time your colorist suggests one, you’ll most likely want one!)  Read on…

  • Hair Glazes give luster, vitality and a beautiful reflective shine.  That’s worth it right there!  What gal doesn’t want shiny hair?  hmmm, that would be none!
  • Glazes are ammonia and peroxide free (yay!) No HARM
  • Glazes are available in clear glossing, and conditioning treatments that will boost up shine.  They are also available in tinted versions to enrich the color of your natural color or color treated hair.  Your colorist will decide what is right for you.  She/he wants the best outcome, and for you to be deliriously happy!
  • Glazes lightly coat the cuticle, conditions, and shines, all without a heavy oily appearance.
  • Glazes will minimize frizz and the look of dryness — they are great year round!
  • Lastly, who doesn’t want glorious, touchable, silky hair?  Well, we think we’ve made the case here for you to get those stunning locks ready for the cold weather!

We are here all winter (and every day) to pamper you, and hope you enjoy reading our blog!  Want frizz free, gorgeous hair right out of your favorite magazine? Schedule your appointment and we will get you feeling excited about hopping out of bed each morning!  Make everyday a “great hair day”!

Is Your Hair Color Aging You?

We may not have discovered the fountain of youth, but there are so many things we can do to look our best as we age.  It is a fact that good skin care, such as protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun and using high quality products with retinols, vitamin C and hyaluronic acids can shave years off.  Eating healthy foods and drinking lots of water also is key to looking fab through the years.  But did you know that the wrong hair color can also either add years or take years off?  Here are some things to keep in mind, and of course, consulting with one of our talented hair pros is highly recommended, as they will be able to determine the perfect color based on your skin tone, eye color, and they will also take into account the natural shade of hair color you were born with (which is usually perfect).  So read on for our tips…..

Going Too Dark:

Going too dark can sap color from your face.  As we age we need to keep the shade rich, such as a beautiful chestnut, caramel, multidimensional brown or soft copper depending on your skin tone.  Hair that is too dark can look opague or have the “shoe polish” look.  Adding in some balayage or highlights will brighten your face.

Going Too Light or Ashy:

Blonde is beautiful but very ashy shades can appear to be gray and age you.  Butter, golden blonde or cool blonde shades without ash are best. There is a fine line between too warm and too cool.  As we age our skin gets more sallow so adding a few free form strokes of balayage around your face can “wake up” your whole face.

Healthy Hair Matters:

Just as picking the right shade of color matters, so does having healthy hair.  Over coloring, using the wrong products (harsh shampoos, sprays or products with drying alcohol) and washing hair too often can make hair dried and fried.  Even if you pick the perfect shade of hair color, it will not look great on abused hair.

The Difference Between Foil Highlights and Balayage

Foil highlighting is a process mostly all women are familiar with, and perhaps, maybe you yourself, have gotten foils to go lighter and brighter! Foil highlighting involves working row by row in a linear fashion and painting on color from the root to the end and processing with foils.  The entire section of hair is coated evenly for a more uniform effect.  So let’s explore what the difference is between these traditional highlights and the technique of balayage……

Balayage is a French word which actually means to sweep or paint (also called a “freehand” technique).  Unlike foils, this technique allows the color professional the ability to place the color exactly where it will light up and enhance your individual features and coloring.  The color is painted on by hand and the colorist can scatter them throughout for a truly “sunkissed” look, which in turn is also more organic looking.  Unlike foils, where hair is lightened from the roots to the ends, the balayage technique allows hair to be more muted at the root and then getting progressively lighter.

In a nutshell, here are the things you need to know about balayage:

  • Softer, more natural and organic looking
  • More control over where color is placed
  • Less noticeable roots as hair grows out
  • More time in between touch ups as roots show less.  With foils there is more of a straight line at the root as it grows.

4 Reasons Your Hair Color is Fading Too Fast

We know how great it feels the day you get your hair color refreshed by touching up the roots, perhaps adding highlights or balayage, or even daring to try a whole new color!  You’ve taken the time and paid good money for professional color, so shouldn’t you make it a point to keep it looking fabulous by taking steps to avoid fading those tresses?  We think so (and we know do too!).  Here are 4 reasons your hair color is fading too fast:

Screen Shot 2016-08-18 at 10.31.54 AM

  1.  USING THE WRONG SHAMPOO:  Sulfates are your hair’s enemy!  Many shampoos on the market are full of harsh detergents and sulfates which can strip your lovely color.  You’ve invested in your hair with professional color so make sure to use shampoos that are free of these harsh ingredients.
  2. DAMAGED HAIR:  Overprocessed hair damages the cuticle of your hair.  When hair is damaged the cuticle does not seal down and the color escapes from the unsealed cuticle.  It is so important not to over use flat irons and curling irons and to have a professional color your hair using high quality products that are gentler on your locks!  Take the time to talk with your hairdresser about the products and services that can prevent more damage.
  3. WASHING HAIR TOO OFTEN:  This is another reason color fades.  Washing hair too much strips color, even if you use a sulfate free shampoo.  Your hair color will look better longer and your hair will be healthier if you go longer between shampoos.
  4. SUNSHINE:  You may love the feeling of the warm sunshine but those UV rays are fading your hair color faster, not to mention how drying those rays can be!  What steps to take?  First, use hair products that offer SPF protection and second, find a great looking hat to completely block the sun’s UV rays.  Even a little sun exposure to your hair each day can add up and fade color.

Your hair color can look beautiful longer by taking these simple steps.

When it comes to color, Paula looks at your skin tone and eye color and determines if you fall into the “cool” or “warm” category.  Somewhere in between would be “neutral”, not too cool and not too warm.  Once the color has been established she will perhaps suggest a few highlights that will enhance the shape of the cut and illuminate your face to show off your best features!

Maintenance is something Paula discusses with each client, as she wants to be sure that the cut and color you desire will fit into your lifestyle.  She also specializes in Keratin Complex and Brazillian Blowouts for shiny hair with no frizzies! Finally, she makes the health of your hair a top priority and always strives to maintain the integrity of the hair for a flawless and healthy look!  Need a new look?  Book an appointment with Paula and leave with a spring in your step!
