This past Wednesday evening we held our 1st Annual Girls Beauty, Fashion & Shopping night to benefit Smile Train, an organization that gives children with cleft palate a brand new smile. We would like to thank all who attended and congratulate the 5 winners who won free Xeomin treatments from our Medical Director, Dr. Fredric Newman (thank you Dr. Newman)! We also congratulate the big winner of our raffle basket worth over $3,000, Peggy Brown!
If you missed it, we had a beautiful spread of finger foods and refreshments, all with a tropical theme to get all in the mood for a new season of warm, sunny weather! In the center of all our delicious bites was a pineapple tree, complete with tiny lights and palm tree leaves! All the ladies shopped, mingled and enjoyed an evening with the girls!
A big thank you for donations and for the purchase of raffle tickets. All proceeds will go to Smile Train! Here are the highlights of the evening…..
You may change jobs, places you live, your clothes and lots of other things during your lifetime but the one thing that will stay with you to the end is your skin! Our belief: It is never, ever too early to take care of your skin! Did you also know that most of the sun damage we get is before the age of 20? That is why it is so very important to apply sunscreen from early on in life. Yes, genes do have some factor in how we age, but it is proven that lifestyle can and does change the outcome, depending on how well (or not so well) you have cared for your skin. These are some good guidelines for your skin. Here is skin care by the decade:
Skin Care in Your 20’s:
Remove your makeup every night (no exceptions!): It is so important to be sure to remove makeup before heading off to bed! Makeup, oils and dirt will clog pores which can lead to breakouts and lackluster skin.
Use a moisturizer with sunscreen every day: Find a moisturizer for your particular skin type that contains a sunscreen to protect skin from the harsh rays of the sun. We get sun exposure daily even if you are not sitting at the beach!
Get in the habit of drinking water: Water is cleansing and hydrating. Adding a squeeze of fresh lemon makes it even more so! Keeping skin hydrated is key to good skin.
Think about adding a supplement like Biotin to your diet (NOTE: ALWAYS check with your doctor prior to taking any supplement) which is great for hair, skin and nails.
Skin Care in Your 30’s:
Continue with the regimen above.
Facials: Facials are beneficial at any age! We have facials of all types, including: Vitamin Therapy Facials, Facials for Young Adults and our Signature Facial just to name a few! Treat your skin to some love with one that is right for you!
Add Vitamin C and A: Skin begins to lose elasticity in your 30’s so being proactive is key! Using products packed with Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and Vitamin A (retinoids) are backed by science. These little wonders are great for thickening skin, producing more collagen, and helping with discolorations and adding brightness. We have fabulous skin care lines from Sothys, SkinCeuticals and Environ that contain these vitamins. Ask our Estheticians which is right for you!
Using injectables is a personal decision: Each of us has the right to decide if using injectables is right for our skin. If you do decide to use them it is imperative that you see a trained doctor! There are a lot of offers for inexpensive Botox and fillers and you get what you pay for! We are proud to have our Medical Director, Dr. Fredric Newman, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, affiliated with us to provide injectables so the look is beautiful and natural. Fillers and Botox are a great addition to your skin care to prevent scowl lines between eyebrows, crows feet, or forehead lines. If you do decide to go ahead with it you will be treated in Dr. Newman’s medical office located only blocks away from us! Again, this is a personal decision and one that you must decide is right for you.
Skin Care in Your 40’s and 50’s:
Continue with the regimen’s above
Try Anti-aging Facials: Our Ultimate Vitamin Therapy Facial is a luxurious treatment with intense penetration of vitamins. Our Roll Away the Years Treatment is an extraordinary treatment for aging skin and our Oxygen Facial delivers pure oxygen with 87 different vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids.
Menopause in women causes hormone levels to drop and this in turn makes skin even drier, less elastic and cell turnover slows significantly. Skin care during this time is essential and the use of the proper skin care products is extremely important to have skin looking it’s best!
Skin Care 60’s and Beyond:
Continue a good skin care regimen like above and don’t think that it’s okay to stop the sunscreen! Sunscreen and good skin care are a life long commitment, not only to avoid wrinkles but wearing sunscreen daily is a proactive choice to keep skin cancer at bay.
Love your beautiful self! Can we be any clearer? Love and kindness towards yourself and others and a zest and joy for life make you fabulous no matter what your age!
Have a beautiful day! xoxo
DISCLAIMER: This is not intended to be medical advice. Always check with your doctor prior to using Vitamin A, Vitamin C or any supplement whether it is taken internally or used externally. Pregnant women should always consult a doctor as well.
We are so very fortunate to have Dr. Fredric Newman as Medical Director for our spa! Dr. Newman is a very well known and highly respected Plastic Surgeon with an office here in Darien, as well as in Scarsdale, New York. We trust sending you, our clients, to his office, as we know you are in artful and skillful hands! He has amazing credentials, graduating from Yale and going on to Harvard Medical School to receive his general surgery training. He is also recognized as one of the top plastic surgeons in America but that’s just a little bit about him… want to know more? (click here).
We have many clients who use Dr. Newman, but as the writer of our blog, I wanted to share my personal experience with those clients who had not had the privilege of meeting him and seeing the amazing work he does!
I called his office and made my appointment. Within moments of speaking with his staff I had a great feeling about his office, as they were so warm and friendly! I told them I was thinking about perhaps doing some injectables, in particular Botox, to rid my forehead of that angry, scowling look! I was getting tired of looking like I was always mad about something (don’t talk to my husband, he will probably tell you I am!).
On the morning of the appointment I was pretty nervous. I walked into his office and the warm looking furnishings were a far cry from every other doctors office I had been in! This “waiting room” looked more like a living room! Feeling as if I were in a warm home instead of a cold office instantly put me at ease…..
I was called in by a nurse moments later. No waiting time here! Dr. Newman introduced himself to me and I told him I was interested in writing a piece for our blog that would give our clients an idea of what it was like to get Botox, and my experience as a whole. In speaking with him, I encountered a truly warm, kind and caring soul, one that expressed to me, when asked, that his reasons for going into Plastic Surgery to begin with was because he saw children in medical school who he could help with his skills. I later learned from his Assistant, Yvonne, that many of his patients who were children or teens, gave him stuffed animals after their surgery that looked like how they felt prior to their procedure! Dr. Newman keeps these special gifts in his private office and they sit proudly upon his leather sofa, gently reminding him of why he ventured out to become a Plastic Surgeon to begin with!
On to the Botox……I mentioned the Botox for my “scowl” lines on the forehead and he didn’t seem to disagree. I asked if he could use a little of it to also give a small lift to my brow, since I tended to have an extremely strong muscle in my forehead that caused me not only to have lines in between my eyes, but also made my brows fall at the outer corners. I went on to mention other things I wanted to do but he actually disagreed with me, telling me I didn’t need to do those things! What???? Wait…… Did I really just hear a doctor, a top Plastic Surgeon for that matter say that I didn’t need those other injectables? Yes I did! And do you know what? My trust and respect for this man, this talented surgeon, grew by leaps, just from his sheer honesty (it also made me feel so much better about what I thought were flaws)! Dr. Newman’s approach to injectables and fillers is one of erring on the conservative side so his patients look very natural, and in no way look like they have had anything done! I love that!
As he gently injected my forehead, I expected more pain (and I am a HUGE baby!),but honestly, after birthing three children, this was a total cake walk! I barely felt the little pinches of each poke of the needle! His nurse handed me a cold pack to apply and I was off, waiting the few days to see the effects (Botox takes a few days to a week to take full effect) of my soon-to-be line free, scowl free forehead!
Within a few days the muscles were no longer allowing me to scrunch and scowl, and I also had a more “awake and open eyed” look!! It’s as if I had a little brow lift, all with minimal pain and without that dreaded “frozen” look you see with so many Botox injections gone wrong! That was the one thing I did not want! My idea of looking younger did not include not being able to show expression! Thrilled that I had taken the plunge, I was eager to complete the “new me” so I headed off to get a facial in our spa, new lashes and makeup with Dee, buttery baliage and haircut, and a fabulous mani/pedi! Ahhhh…… bring on summer! I’m ready for you!
Is Botox right for you? If you have scowl lines, need a bit of a lift and are sick of looking angry (even if you’re not!), than a trip to Dr. Newman is in order! I’m loving it! xoxo
